(5-22-08 New Richmond, WI) With racing action severely hampered by the weather this spring, an extra night was added to the Cedar Lake Speedway schedule for Thursday May 22.  A fine afternoon of weather greeted fans and drivers as they prepared for an evening of racing in four NASCAR weekly divisions.  Making their first appearance of the season, the NASCAR super stocks and midwest modifieds were joined by the NASCAR modified and street stock divisions for just their second race of 2008. When the final checkered had waved, victories had been earned by Pat Doar in the NASCAR modifieds, defending CLS track champion Larry Boumeester in the NASCAR super stocks, Shawn Phillips in the NASCAR midwest modifieds, and the only female driver to win a feature race in CLS history Chanda Fjorden-Nord took top honors in the NASCAR street stock division.

The 15 car field in the NASCAR street stock class got the program underway with two heat races.  The winners were Shawn Kammerud and Jared Gross.  The NASCAR midwest modifieds had the top car count for the night with 26 cars on hand requiring three heat races.  Winners included Carth Mitchell, Jeremy Houle and Shawn Phillips.  Mike Weber and Dan Carlson topped the two heats for the 15 cars signed in for the NASCAR super stocks.  The NASCAR modified heats for their 23 car field had Jason Miller, Pat Doar and Joey Jensen claiming top honors.  No B Mains were necessary, so following an intermission to do some track touch-up, it was time to go feature racing.

The 15 starters for the 15 lap NASCAR street stock feature were paced by last Saturday's feature winner Devin Neske and outside front row starter Jared Gross.  A competitive battle for the top spots began at the drop of flagman Jeff Stacken's green flag.  Neske led the first two laps before Gross took over up front.  With four laps in the books, Kelly Knutson tagged the backstretch wall and came to rest up against it.  His disabled car was towed to the pits and the battle for the lead picked right back up again under green.  With eight laps in, the battle for first saw three wide action exiting turn four.  Contact between Neske and leader Gross on the frontstretch resulted in damage to both cars and the race was under its second caution.  With Neske and Gross both unable to continue, Chanda Fjorden-Nord inherited the lead.  Nord led the next two laps until the third and final caution waved when Jeff Heintz' car turned sideways in turn one.  The race for the top spot got serious again following the restart, as Fjorden-Nord led lap 11 only to see Shawn Kammerud move past her on the high side enroute to leading lap 12.  Kammerud slipped high on lap 13, as Fjorden-Nord regained the lead and ninth starter Adam Soltis moved into second.  Fjorden-Nord held off Soltis for the win while Kammerud regrouped to ride home third.  Wes Howland and Scott Splittstoesser completed the top five.

With just one car unable to make the call, the 25 car starting field roared to life for the 15 lap NASCAR midwest modified feature event.  The race was immediately under caution when rookie Nick Johnson spun in turn one on the opening lap.  Jake Miller, Justin Schill and Troy Sande were also collected.  Miller and Sande were unable to continue.  On the second start attempt, a couple of cars spun in turn two while a hard crash involved four cars in turn three.  The cars of Paul Fontecchio, Matt Potvin and Clayton Wagamon incurred serious damage and were done.  Justin Schill went to the work area to change a flat tire and returned.  The third time was the charm, as the race got underway with polesitter Carth Mitchell grabbing the early lead.  Mitchell soon felt pressure from veteran driver Dave Morgan.  Morgan narrowly edged past for the lead on lap five only to have Mitchell regain the top spot on laps six and seven.  The third caution flew when Dane Durbin and Ronnie Rihn tangled in turn four.  Durbin's car rode the hook to the pits with front end damage while Rihn was given his position back.  On the restart, Morgan wrestled the lead back from Mitchell while Shawn Phillips took second a lap later.  Phillips powered by Morgan on lap 11 for the lead.  A lap later the final caution flew for a spin in turn 4.  Phillips continued to pace the field for the remaining four laps enroute to the victory.  Morgan held off Jeremy Houle to finish second.  Rounding out the top five were Carth Mitchell and 15th starter Sam Nelson.  Attrition took its toll as just 14 of the 25 starters were around at the end.  Phillips collected $100 from Goodyear Tire & Rubber for his win on Goodyear Eagles.

The NASCAR super stocks saw 15 cars take the green for their 20 lap feature race.  Outside front row starter Tim Borgeson grabbed the lead from pole sitter Dan Carlson on the opening lap and looked strong up front as Carlson and Larry Boumeester trailed.  Jim Gullikson was on the move from his 10th starting spot in the early going, moving up to fifth on lap 2, fourth on lap 3, and third on lap 7.  Boumeester moved into the second position on lap 7 when Carlson got a bit crossed up and slipped back a few spots.  Boumeester then began to apply the pressure on leader Borgeson while Gullikson, Carlson and Cory Davis waged a very good battle behind them.  Davis grabbed third from Gullikson on lap 12 but Gullikson took the spot back a couple of laps later.  Just as it appeared the race would run nonstop to the finish, Mike Bruggeman looped his car in turn four to bring out the caution shortly after the leaders had taken the white flag.  This would set up an exciting two lap dash to the finish with Borgeson, Boumeester, Gullikson, Davis and Carlson all in contention.  On the restart, Boumeester dove low into turn one while Borgeson jumped the cushion a bit up top.  Boumeester slid up in front of Borgeson who then turned down underneath him exiting turn two.  The battle for the lead continued into turn three as Borgeson attempted to get underneath Boumeester.  Borgeson ended up spinning around and then getting tagged enough to end up on his roof.  This resulted in the only red flag of the night.  Borgeson's strong run up front was over, as the wrecker crew righted his car and pushed it to the pits.  Larry Boumeester led the final two circuits to pick up the win while Cory Davis got past Jim Gullikson on the last lap to finish second.  Dan Carlson and 12th starter Mike Loomis completed the top five.  Boumeester earned an extra $100 bonus from Alwin's North Side Service and an additional $100 from Goodyear Tire & Rubber for his victory.

The final feature event of the night would see the 23 car field for NASCAR modifieds paced by Dano Ostrander and Pat Doar.  A spin in turn one on the opening lap by Chris Gorka collected Keith Lepinski, Jake Hartung, and Don Brightbill.  A complete restart was in order, as all cars were able to continue.  The second attempt to get the race underway saw Steve Lavasseur blow an engine and dump oil on the front stretch while Shaun Kelley broke something in the rear end of his mod.  The race went green on the third try with Pat Doar jumping out into the lead followed by Dave Cain.  Joey Jensen moved past Ostrander for third on lap 4 and Jason Miller moved up to fourth a lap later.  Miller got by Jensen for third a few laps later, as the lead duo remained the same.  Cain began to close in and challenge Doar for the lead during the next three laps.  Cain took the top spot on lap 11 but was then involved in an incident in turn one while attempting to lap Bruce Tourville.  Both Cain and Tourville spun.  The initial call had Cain going to the back, but Tourville stopped on the front stretch and consulted with track officials.  Tourville accepted the blame for the incident and Cain was placed back in the second running position, as scoring had reverted back to the last fully completed lap.  This meant Doar was still the leader.  Cain challenged Doar a couple of times after the race went back to green, but he was never able to move past for the lead.  Pat Doar held off Cain for the win.  Joey Jensen, who had moved back past Jason Miller for third on lap 12, held off Miller to finish third.  Miller was fourth ahead of Dano Ostrander.  Doar also earned an extra $100 bonus from Alwin's North Side Service.

Cedar Lake Speedway would like to thank Dave Alwin at Alwin’s North Side Service in Hudson Wisconsin for win bonuses in the super stock & modified divisions and Goodyear Tire & Rubber for victory bonuses in the midwest modified and super stock divisions.

An entertaining and interesting evening of racing action concluded at a reasonable hour, sending fans and drivers on their way home.  The first of four Features Only Nights will be held at the Cedar Lake Speedway on Saturday May 25 with all five NASCAR divisions in action including the late models, modifieds, super stocks, midwest mods and street stocks.  Racing is slated to get underway at 6:30.  It's also Kids Night, so all kids 10 and under get in free.
