134 Cars Pack CLS Pits August 16th!

Doar, Cain, Boumeester, Wagamon & Heintz are Winners at Cedar Lake Speedway

8-16-08 New Richmond, WI

by Greg Parent

Great summer weather coupled with the third Kids Night of the season produced a large turn out of race cars and fans on Saturday August 16 at the Cedar Lake Speedway.  The pits were filled with 134 cars in the five weekly NASCAR racing divisions with several drivers making their first appearance of the season at the popular 3/8 mile high-banked Wisconsin track.  Young Clayton Wagamon earned his first career CLS feature victory in the Midwest modified division while Jeff Heintz raced to his second win of the season in the street stocks.  Defending track champion Larry Boumeester drove to his third win of the season in a caution-filled super stock feature.  Dave Cain was well on his way to earning his fifth track championship when he passed Joey Jensen late in the race to garner his seventh win of 2008 in the modified division.  Pat Doar raced ahead of a strong field of late models to post his first main event win.

The racing program got underway with two NASCAR street stock heat races for their 16 car field.  Track point leader Devin Neske and his closest pursuer Shawn Kammerud were the winners.  The NASCAR Midwest modifieds had four heats for the 34 cars on hand.  Rookie Jeremy Houle, Vince Corbin, Clark Perry and Sam Nelson were the victors, as the yellow waved only once during the four heats.  Three heats for the 25 car NASCAR super stock field saw track point leader Dan Carlson, Mike Loomis and young Josh Anderson come home first.  It was Anderson's first appearance of the season.  The first NASCAR modified heat was a dandy, as Terry Hanson held off a pack of cars for the win.  Jason Miller and Joey Jensen led all the way in the other two heats.  The NASCAR late models equaled their season-best regular night car count with 30 competitors on hand.  Current track point leader Brent Larson, John Kaanta and Rick Egersdorf were the heat race winners.

The Midwest modified and late model divisions required B Mains due to their large car counts.  Last week's feature winner Jason Vandekamp led all the way for the win in the 12 lap Midwest mod B Main.  Rob Caho Jr and back row starters A J Roschen and Steve Strandlund Sr. earned the other feature transfer positions in a race slowed by three cautions.  Kerry Hanson survived a couple of cautions to lead all the way in the 12 lap late model B Main.  Bob Slater, Brent Mueller, Bryan Wennen, Dennis Larson and Dave Friendt got the final feature transfer spots.  With B Main action completed, several activities for the kids including bike races were held in the infield during intermission.

Sixteen NASCAR street stocks lined up for the first feature race action of the evening.  Jared Gross and Scott Splittstoesser paced the field for what would be 15 incredible laps of racing.  Splittstoesser grabbed the early lead with a huge pack of cars battling behind him.  The 2-5 spots changed hands every lap and usually several times per lap, as the race rolled along under green.  Splittstoesser held a slim lead just in front of several cars including Jeff Heintz, Ron Hanestad, Devin Neske, Adam Solits, Mike Raboin, Jared Gross, and Chanda Fjorden-Nord with several more cars just behind that group.  The lone caution waved when Gross and Fjorden-Nord got together in turn 2 with just four laps left.  Chanda's car was done for the night while Gross tagged the tail for the restart.  Splittstoesser was looking for his first win in the division, but with two laps to go Jeff Heintz emerged from the pack racing behind him and took over the top spot.  Heintz was able to hold off Splittstoesser for his second win of the season.  Devin Neske, 12th starter Ron Hanestad and 10th starter Adam Soltis completed the top five in a very entertaining street stock feature event.

A full field of 24 NASCAR Midwest modifieds were brought around for 20 racing laps by front row starters Clint Larson and Alex Gerlach.  Gerlach raced to the lead at the drop of the green, as several cars jockeyed for positions just behind him.  The lone caution of the race waved with three laps in when Larson spun in turn 4 and collected the cars of current track point leader Shawn Phillips, Vince Corbin and A J Roschen while several others took evasive action.  All four cars were unable to continue.  When the green replaced the yellow; Clark Perry moved by Gerlach for the lead but it was young Clayton Wagamon on the move forward.  Wagamon had started 10th and was passing cars each lap.  On lap 6 Wagamon moved by Perry for the lead, a lead he would never relinquish as the race ran 17 laps nonstop to the finish.  Wagamon went on to earn his first career feature win at the Cedar Lake Speedway much to the delight of his fans.  Perry, Gerlach, Sam Nelson and 12th starter Bryan Siercks completed the top five with 15th starter Adam Archer a close sixth at the line.  Although Wagamon had the field covered once in got the lead, the racing behind him turned out to be a very competitive for several positions.

Unlike the previous two feature races, the 25 car NASCAR super stock feature would see full moon fever hit with six yellows and one red flag slowing the pace and ultimately reducing the run by one lap due to time limit.  Josh Anderson and Mike Loomis brought the field to life with Loomis grabbing the early lead.  Yellow fever hit on lap 3 and would see the yellow light blink on four times with only one lap completed during this span.  That one completed lap though would see Larry Boumeester work underneath Loomis for the lead on lap 4.  With Boumeester up front, a strong battle for the runnerup position developed between Loomis, Tim Borgeson and Mike Weber.  Two more cautions for spins slowed the pace through lap 8.  A run of four green flag laps came to a close when the red light blinked on for a crash in turn 2.  Borgeson had worked his way into the second place position, but while entering turn 2 on lap 13 the rearend broke in his car.  The trailing arm broke off the car and dug into the track.  As luck would have it, Josh Anderson pitched his car sideways to avoid major contact but his fuel cell was punctured by the debris in the track.  Anderson slid up against Borgeson and fuel began pouring out.  Fortunately no fire ensued, but track officials quickly called for a red flag in order to clean up the spilled fuel and remove both cars from the track.  When the race resumed, Loomis and Weber continued their battle for second behind Boumeester.  It looked like the race might run green to the finish, but with 17 laps in Tom Chrest broke and nosed into the turn 2 wall.  It would be a two lap dash to the finish with Boumeester in the lead.  Loomis had crossed the line just inches ahead of Weber the previous lap, so he would run second.  Boumeester led the final two circuits for his third win of the season, but Mike Weber was once again able to get past Mike Loomis to garner the runnerup position.  Behind the lead trio, Dan Carlson and Rich Bishop rounded out the top five.

Although CLS track officials expected some attrition during the heat races and did not schedule a B Main for the NASCAR modifieds, all 28 cars on hand made the call for their feature race.  Jay Richardson and Doug Gustafson would lead the field to the green for 20 laps of racing action.  Following an opening lap incident on the backstretch, all cars restarted and the race was underway with Gustafson, making his first appearance of the season, jumping into the early lead up on the cushion.  Several cars battled for the 2-5 spots until the second yellow blinked on with 6 laps in for a spin in turn 3.  Gustafson continued to lead, but it was Joey Jensen and 10th starter Dave Cain on the move.  Jensen grabbed the lead on lap 9 from Gustafson and one lap later the final caution flew for a Scott Duvall spin.  Dave Cain was now in fourth behind Jensen, Gustafson, and Jason Gross.  During the final 11 lap run to the finish, some very good racing took place for several positions.  Cain continued to edge forward and moved into the second spot on lap 15.  Cain closed in on the leader and on lap 18 while exiting turn two slid up in front of Jensen with some contact being made.  Cain drove ahead for his seventh win of the season with Jensen a close second.  Jensen showed his displeasure following the race with the move Cain made to take the lead.  Jason Gross, Doug Gustafson, and Jason Miller completed the top five.  Rounding out the top ten were Terry Hanson, Pat Doar, Jay Richardson, Larry Zeller Jr and Jeremy Gross.

The final feature event of the evening would see 24 ground-pounding NASCAR late models racing for 30 laps.  Fresh off his modified victory, Dave Cain and Pat Doar would lead the field to starter Jeff Stacken's green flag.  The race was immediately under the red flag for an eight car accident exiting turn two and down the backstretch on the opening lap.  Amazingly, seven of the eight cars involved were able to restart with only Kerry Hanson's car riding the hook to the pits.  On the second start attempt, Mike Bear spun in turn 1 and was out of the race since the first caution had also been charged to the veteran driver.  The third time was the charm and the race would go 30 laps nonstop.  Pat Doar blasted into the lead from his outside front row starting spot with Dave Cain in second.  Soon it was Rick Hanestad getting past Cain for second, as the driver of the #71H car set his sights on the leader.  Hanestad slowly began reeling in Doar, as the leaders soon encountered lapped traffic.  With Doar running up high and Hanestad running low, the margin continued to shrink but so did the laps left in the race.  Cain was solidly in third while Mike Nutzmann and Mike Goodremote traded the fourth spot back and forth for several laps before Nutzmann locked it in.  Current track point leader Brent Larson was slowly working his way forward from his ninth starting spot.  As the leaders continued to work lapped traffic, Hanestad was never able to pull within more than a few car lengths of Doar.  In the late stages of the race, Doar put three lapped cars between himself and second place enroute to the victory.  It was Doar's first main event win of the season after having won a qualifying feature race on Double Feature Night earlier in the season.  Hanestad continued his strong performances at CLS with a solid second place finish.  Dave Cain, Mike Nutzmann and Brent Larson completed the top five.  Mike Goodremote, Rick Egersdorf, Cory Mahder, Marshall Fegers and last week's winner John Kaanta rounded out the top ten.

Racing action continues next week at the Cedar Lake Speedway for the final regular night of competition this season featuring the NASCAR modifieds, super stocks, midwest mods and street stocks.  The NASCAR late models have the night off.

Following a weekend off for the Labor Day holiday, racing returns for the 8th Annual Jerry Richert Memorial on Saturday night September 6 featuring the popular IRA versus Knoxville Challenge along with the Northern Vintage Racing Association stock cars and super modifieds.  The 410 sprint car turnout is expected to be around 40 cars that night.

The following week the Legendary 100 comes to the Cedar Lake Speedway with four straight nights of action beginning on Wednesday September 10 and concluding on Saturday September 13.  Details on the exact format will be released very soon, but it is expected to be very similar to previous years.  The Saturday night September 13 finale will also feature the makeup for the rained out 7th Annual Billy Anderson Memorial.  A complete program of 360 winged sprint car racing will take place that night with a field of 20-25 cars expected.

Then on Saturday September 20 the 4th Annual $10,000 to win Enduro race returns with a 5:00 PM scheduled start time.

The season will conclude the next week with three big nights of racing at the 1st Annual Badger State Nationals presented by FYE Motorsports on Thursday September 25 through Saturday September 27 highlighted by the $12,000 to win late model feature race and $3,000 to win midwest modified main event.  Race fans will want to make plans to attend these great season-ending special events at the Cedar Lake Speedway.
