Long Day Caps Off Extended Legendary 100 At CLS
New Richmond, WI (9-15-13)
By: Greg Parent

The 2013 edition of the popular Legendary 100 was scheduled for three days, but rainy weather on Saturday night forced Cedar Lake Speedway to expand the event to four days on Sunday. A very long day and evening of racing concluded with the entire NASCAR sanctioned program able to be completed despite the setback from Mother Nature on Saturday night. In the end, race fans saw one of the closest finishes in the late model division in the history of the track on Sunday evening. The Legendary 100 championship feature in the late model class was determined by a matter of inches at the finish line. Jimmy Mars was initially announced as the winner, but a video review of the finish reversed the decision and awarded the win to his brother-in-law Scott Gilberts. Other Legendary 100 winners included Darrell Nelson in the modifieds, Ben Hillman in the pro stocks, Skeeter Estey in the Midwest mods, Sam Fankhauser in the street stocks, George Richards in the pure stocks, and Barret Hammond in the hornets. Five of the seven champions were first-time winners of the event.

The late model feature finish created a real buzz amongst race fans, as Scott Gilberts had led 38 laps of the 40 lap main event when the lone caution flag flew. This set the stage for a two lap dash to the checkers. Gilberts had been running the high side on the cushion while Mars was generally working the middle lane. Mars had been closing on Gilberts in the waning stages of the race in lapped traffic, and the caution allowed him a chance for the win. Gilberts blew over the cushion in turn two on the restart and Mars edged past him down the back stretch. Exiting turn four coming to the white flag, Mars had the advantage but Gilberts fought back to grab a narrow lead at the line. Once again, Gilberts had some problems in turn two and Mars regained the lead. Just like the previous lap, Mars had the lead exiting turn four with Gilberts powering off the cushion in a drag race to the finish line. In a split decision in the scoring tower, Jimmy Mars was announced as the winner. In the middle of Scott Tiefs interview with Mars in Victory Lane, track officials radioed down that the finish was under video review. The professional that Mars is, Jimmy told Tiefs that he wanted CLS to get it right and would wait for the final decision. The official decision came after careful review of the video shot from the top of the scoring tower revealed Gilberts and Mars in nearly a dead heat at the line, but with Gilberts appearing to have a very slim lead of maybe a couple of inches. Yes fans, it was that close and practically could have gone either way. For Gilberts, it was his first CLS late model victory and what a way to celebrate a Legendary 100 win. Brady Smith, A.J. Diemel and Eric Breeschoten rounded out the top five.

The modified feature, which ran right before the late model main, on a freshly prepared racing surface proved to be a very good race. Although Darrell Nelson led all 30 laps, by no means was it an easy victory for the Hermantown driver and 2013 CLS NASCAR Modified track champion. Thursday night winner Cory Mahder came from his sixth starting spot and challenged Nelson on several occasions in the second half of the race but could not complete a pass for the win. Nelson earned his second Legendary 100 title with Mahder a close second. Kelly Estey, Jimmy Mars and Rodney Sanders from 19th completed the top five over what turned out to be an extremely strong field of modifieds on hand for the Legendary 100 weekend. The modified division had the top car count with 56 cars on hand.

The pro stock feature ended up being the final race of the evening, and like some of the earlier features, it also highlighted some competitive racing for the top spot. Kelly Anderson blasted to the early lead from his inside row two starting spot and led the first 20 laps. The race had gone green for the 17 laps before a series of cautions bogged down the action four times before another lap was completed. Throughout a good share of the race, Ben Hillman had been keeping a close eye on Anderson up front from his runner-up spot. On lap 21, Hillman took the lead, survived a green-white checker dash to the finish, and went on to record his second Legendary 100 win in the 25 lap main event. Anderson rode home a close second. Adam Ayotte, Tim Borgeson and Andy Grymala completed the top five in an entertaining finale for the weekend.

The 25 lap Midwest modified feature was a marathon, had some controversy, and ultimately produced a new winner. Skeeter Estey led the first 14 laps before ninth starter Tony Schill grabbed the lead on lap 15. Schill led three laps only to see Estey regain the top spot on lap 18. On the next lap, the caution blinked on for the fifth time in the race and that's when things got interesting up front. On the restart, Dustin Scott who was now running second turned sideways and collected David Swearingen. Swearingen ended up in the work area with a flat tire while Scott was charged with the caution. Scott did not agree, stopped twice to plead his case with track officials, and then drove to the pits. Once again on the next restart, Ryan Olson got into the back of Tony Schill (now in second again) entering turn three and Schill spun around. Olson was charged with the caution, but he certainly did not agree with the call, stopped twice on the track, and eventually slung some dirt towards the turn two track officials. This resulted in an immediate DQ, but he remained on the track and restarted tail-end. With two laps to go, the eighth and final caution slowed the pace with Olson up to sixth from the back. Told once again over the Raceiver radio that he was not being scored and would not be paid, he finally retired to the pit area. The race was finally completed with Skeeter Estey picking up his first CLS win and first Legendary 100 title. Jason Vandekamp, who had to restart at the tail of the field with 14 laps in the books after changing a flat tire, raced his way back up to second in the end, challenged Estey for the lead in the final two lap shootout, but came up one spot short. Josh Smith, Tony Schill and Josh Bazey from 25th rounded out the top five. Vandekamp also locked up the NASCAR Whalen All American Series short-track National modified championship title.

The street stock feature was contested during the late afternoon/early evening hours with the sun shining. The cushion was the place to be in this 20 lap main, as only Chris Peterson was making the bottom lane work. Sam Fankhauser led all the way, but Jim Gullikson was right there putting the pressure on him and pulling alongside a couple of times looking for a way past. That avenue never came for Gullikson, who had won on Thursday night. Fankhauser recorded his first CLS win and Legendary 100 victory over Gullikson. Peterson, who ran as high as second in the race, settled for third at the finish in front of Allen Gessel, Jr and Cory Hanson.

The 15 lap pure stock feature, run right before the street stocks, saw three different leaders. Jason Havel led the first two laps, then Cole Lonergan led the next two before George Richards took the helm following a lap four restart. The race ran the final 11 laps green and Richards picked up his first CLS Legendary 100 win. Lonergan held close in second ahead of Jay Folz, Nick Traynor and Dustin Doughty. Havel, who topped the Thursday night program, had to go to the work area after two laps to have his crew remove the hood on his car. Havel was slow for several laps, got lapped, then got back up to full speed but never recovered.

The hornet feature was a bit like an enduro, slowed several times under caution. In the end, 2013 track champion Barret Hammond picked up his fourth win of the season and first Legendary 100 championship in the 15 lap main event. Chris Dyke, last year's winner Jeremy Johnson, Derrick Johnson and Dave Smith completed the top five.

Thursday night feature winners included included Jimmy Mars in the late models, Cory Mahder in the modifieds, Joey Jensen in the pro stocks, Jason Vandekamp in the Midwest mods, Jim Gullikson in the street stocks, Jason Havel in the pure stocks and Nate Coopman in the hornets. A total of 206 cars participated in the opening night program which featured 37 races and 424 laps of green flag action.

On Friday, a whopping 231 cars signed into the pits for heat race and pole dash action. Winning the Legendary Shootout Qualifiers (dashes for the top 12 cars in passing points in the heat races) in order to set the first six rows for the championship feature events were Jimmy Mars in the late models, Craig Thatcher in the modifieds, Ben Hanke in the pro stocks, Skeeter Estey in the Midwest mods, Jim Gullikson in the street stocks, Jason Havel in the pure stocks and Barret Hammond in the hornets. The weather the first two nights was pretty decent, but persistent light rain on Saturday evening forced CLS track owners to make the decision to race on Sunday. Although Sunday proved to be a very long day, most racers and fans were glad that CLS made the call to complete their event on Sunday with nine B Mains, four Last Chance Races, and seven Championship Features to cap off the 2013 Legendary 100. The over all event saw some very good racing take place at a track well-known for this mid September tradition each season. The final event on the 2013 racing schedule is the 8th Annual $10,000-to-win Hornet Enduro on Saturday September 21 starting at 5:30.
