58th Season Opener Delivers Outstanding Races!

New Richmond, WI (4-11-15)

By: Greg Parent

A pleasant spring afternoon with temperatures in the lower to mid 60s made for a decent opening night at the Cedar Lake Speedway.  With Thursday night practice and the Friday night show cancelled due to weather, a two-hour practice session was held in the afternoon before a full program in all five NASCAR racing divisions kicked off the 58th season at the historic western Wisconsin 3/8 mile dirt oval.  A fine field of 109 cars were on hand for the opener.

For the second consecutive year at the season opener, Adam Hensel won the Late Model feature while Dave Mass took home the hardware in the Pro Stocks.  In an exciting last lap pass for the win, Shane Sabraski topped the Midwest Modified main event and he also earned his first career CLS feature win a bit later on in the Modified division.  Jeremy Johnson topped the Hornet feature.

The track was in very good condition for the opening night.  The 20 lap Pro Stock main event was the first feature on tap for the evening.  Adam Ayotte led the first four laps before Dave Mass took command on the first restart.  Mass basically had the field covered for the remaining 16 laps.  The race was slowed on three more occasions, but each time Mass pulled away from the field en route to his 5th career CLS win in the division.  2013-2014 track champion Mike Loomis came from 8th to finish 2nd.  Willy Johnson, two-time track champion Mike Weber and Ayotte completed the top five.  Heat races were won by Mass and Ben Hanke.

A large field of 42 Midwest Mods were pared down to the 24 car starting grid following four heat races and two B Mains.  The 20 lap feature race would see five cautions, but this race also proved to be the best of the evening.  Erik Kanz of Winona led better than 19 laps of the 20 lap distance.  On the final circuit, Shane Sabraski got past Kanz exiting turn two and went on to record his 4th career CLS Midwest Mod main event victory in an exciting final three laps.  Kanz finsihed second ahead of three-time Midwest Mod track champion Jason Vandekamp.  Young Jeffrey Lien, Jr. turned in one of his best CLS performances with a solid fourth place finish.  Joe Chaploin completed the top five.  Heat races were won by Chaploin, Vandekamp, Dan Wheeler and Kanz.  B Main wins went to 2008 track champion Shawn Phillips and veteran Thunder Bay racer Kevin Monteith.

The Hornets ran both of their heats and their 15 lap feature without a single caution.  Jess Seim led the first five laps in the main event before Jeremy Johnson took over up front for the final ten tours around the hgih-banked dirt oval for his second-ever CLS win.  Seim was able to stay close but came up a couple car lengths short at the finish.  Brad York, Tyler Cruso all the way from Thunder Bay, and Derrick Johnson rounded out the top five.  Heat wins went to Johnson and William Voeltz.

The mighty Modifieds rolled trackside for their 20 lap main with Shane Sabraski and Bob Timm on the front row.  Timm led the first three laps before Sabraski got by.  It was all Sabraski after that in a race that was only slowed three times under caution.  Timm, Kelly Estey, 15th starter Josh Angst and Johnny Broking completed the top five.  On the opening lap of the feature, long-time CLS competitor Bobby Houston returned after taking several seasons off, and his return certainly was spectacular but not in the manner that you would want.  Houston rolled after a group of cars bunched up exiting turn two.  He was okay but his bad damaged car was out of action.  Heat race wins went to Estey and Timm.

The final race of the night was the 30 lap Late Model main.  A bit uncharacteristic for the late model division, their feature race produced six cautions.  Adam Hensel absolutely dominated the race from start to finish, leading all the way from his pole starting position.  Making a rather rare appearance in a late model was modified racer Andy Jones.  Jones was driving for TJ Adams and turned in a very solid performance with a second place finish.  Eric Breeschoten, 2011 track champion Rick Hanested and Jim Carlson completed the top five.  Carlson had to come from the back of the pack following a spin with three laps scored.  Late Model heats were won by Jones and Hensel.

Racing action returns next Saturday night at the Cedar Lake Speedway with another full program in the five weekly divisions slated to get underway at 6:00 PM.
