Rain Holds Off Long Enough To Complete 2nd Week!

Sunny skies in the morning gave way to clouds in the afternoon.  With rain approaching slowly from the south, the Cedar Lake Speedway moved the second show of the season along and ended up just eight laps short in the late model feature before Mother Nature forced the final checkers.  A strong field of 104 cars were on hand in the five weekly divisions.

Picking up his second feature win of the season in the Pro Stock main event was Dave Mass.  Jason Vandekamp held off Mack Estey in the Midwest Modified feature.  For Vandekamp, it was his 150th feature win in his racing career.  The modified main had yellow fever.  Joey Jensen led from start to finish.  The Late Model feature also saw Jake Redetzke lead the whole way, as the aforementioned rain halted the race with 22 of the 30 scheduled laps in the books.  Earning his first-ever CLS feature win in the Hornet division was Blake Dorweiler.

The 20 lap Pro Stock main event was the first feature to come trackside.  Chris Wark, looking for his first CLS feature win, led the first five laps.  Following a caution, 7th starter Dave Mass went from third to first and never looked back.  Mass was not seriously challenged during the remaining 15 laps.  Once again, Mass withstood three more cautions to earn his 6th career CLS win in the division.  For the second week in a row, 2013-2014 track champion Mike Loomis finished 2nd behind Mass.  Wark rode home in third ahead of modified racer Eric Martini and Ryan Wiome.  Heat races were won by Mass and Loomis.

Although not as many as the previous week, the Midwest Modifieds had the largest car count of the evening with 29 cars.  The 20 lap feature race was a good one.  Even though Jason Vandekamp led the entire distance, he was seriously challenged during the last half of the race by young Mack Estey.  On a lap 11 restart, Vandekamp's lead prior to the caution was a mere 6/1000ths of a second.  Estey continued to apply the pressure.  With a crash on the final lap causing the feature to revert back to the white flag lap for scoring, Vandekamp narrowly held off Estey for the win.  It was Vandekamp's 28th career CLS MW Mod feature win.  Mack Estey finished second ahead of his brother Skeeter Estey.  Shawn Phillips and Paul Niznik completed the top five.  Willy Thompson, Joe Chaplin and Mack Estey won the heats.  Douglas Toepper topped the B Main.

The 12 lap Hornet feature saw a good battle for the lead between Jess Seim and Blake Dorweiler.  In the nonstop race, Seim led the first six laps before Dorweiler edged past for the next two.  Seim regained the top spot for three more circuits until Dorweiler made the winning pass on the final lap.  Rob Blackbird, William Voeltz and Dan Knish completed the top five.  For Dorweiler, it was his first CLS win.  Heat wins went to Voeltz and Seim.

The Modifieds certainly had some problems in their 20 lap main event with a total of eight caution flags waving mostly for spins.  Joey Jensen led all the way for his 17th career CLS victory in the division.  Swapping slide jobs during the final two laps, the Arneson brothers, Austin and Casey, provided some exciting moments.  On the final lap, Austin got in a bit hot in turn three, got under his brother, but he lost the handle on his car and spun.  Casey ducked underneath to finish second.  Jason Miller, 13th starter Shaun Peterson and Cory Williams rounded out the top five.  Keith Foss, Clayton Wagamon and Jensen won the heats.

Slated for 30 laps, rain in the area would cut the Late Model main event short.  With no time to keep ahead of the track, this race was basically over after about five laps.  The track took rubber and it was Jake Redetzke leading all the way for his 6th career CLS late model victory.  Darrell Nelson came from fifth to second.  Steve Laursen, 7th starter AJ Diemel, and multi-time track champion Pat Doar completed the top five.  Late Model heats were won by Laursen and Chad Mahder.
Cedar Lake Speedway will attempt to complete the third night of the season next Saturday April 25.  Racing action is scheduled to get underway at 6:00 PM in the five weekly divisions.
