Night 2 of the NASCAR Dash provides exciting racing with 114 cars in the pits!

Despite heavy rain during the early morning hours, the Cedar Lake Speedway track crew managed to battle wet conditions in the pit area and on the track to present the second night of the NASCAR Dash Series on what turned out to be a beautiful summer evening for racing.  The track was heavy, tacky and fast and required some work at various times during the evening, but the feature race action was certainly worth the extra time spent.

A solid field of 114 cars jammed a wet pit area in the five weekly NASCAR divisions requiring several teams to pit outside the track in the parking lot due to a portion of the lower pit area being unusable.  In a very entertaining Late Model feature which saw three different leaders, John Kaanta picked up his 17th career Cedar Lake Speedway feature win.  Darrell Nelson earned his 21st career CLS victory in the Modified division, as he and Dave Mass swapped the lead back-and-forth on a couple of occasions during the second half of the race.  Speaking of Mass, he passed Eric Martini on lap 17 and went on to win his 7th career CLS feature in the caution-plagued Pro Stock main.  A thrilling final few laps in the Midwest Modified main event saw Jason Vandekamp come from his tenth starting spot to take the lead coming to the white flag and go on to record his 30th career CLS win in that division.  Jess Seim waited until the final corner of the final lap to overtake Derrick Johnson for the win in the Hornets.

The NASCAR Pro Stock feature was up first for the evening with 26 cars lining up for 20 laps.  Eric Martini was looking for another CLS win, but Dave Mass had a different idea.  The race was slowed six times for various incidents, as Martini led the first 16 laps.  On the final restart, Mass was able to grab the lead for the remaining four laps for his second win of the season.  Martini finished second ahead of Dexton Koch, Gunnar Watkins and 18th starter Ben Hanke.  NASCAR Dash Night 1 winner Jesse Redetzke finished sixth followed by Marcus Simonson, Andy Jones, Shane Sabraski and Ryan Wiome.

A caution with four laps to go in the 20 lap NASCAR Midwest Modified feature set up a tremendous finish.  Josh Bazey had led from the start, but Ryan Olson and Shawn Phillips stayed close.  The race was slowed five times under caution, but it was after the final yellow when things got real interesting in the battle for the top five spots.  Tenth starter Jason Vandekamp had worked his way past some strong cars and into fourth place.  During the final four lap green flag run to the finish, Vandekamp moved to second with two to go and shot past Bazey coming to the white flag for the lead and eventual victory.  Bazey held on to second in front of Olson with Jason Schill and Shane Sabraski rounding out the top five.  Grant Southworth, Mitch Weiss, 20th starter Kyle Matuska, Tony Schill from the back of the pack after a lap 5 caution, and NASCAR Dash Night 1 winner Cory Bruggeman from 22nd completed the top ten finishers.

Although the Hornet field was rather slim tonight, their 12 lap feature race provided a very entertaining battle between the top two cars for the win.  On the final lap, Derrick Johnson was the leader coming into turn three, but a lapped car was in front of the lead duo.  Johnson went high while Jess Seim shot down low, as the two split the lapped car exiting turn four.  Seim had the lead and won for the third time this season.  Johnson came home a close second.  Tony Minell, Darrell Johnson and Jack Harper completed the top five.

The mighty NASCAR Modifieds lined up 24 cars strong for their 20 lap feature race.  Dave Mass on the pole position usually is not a good sign for the rest of the field, and Mass immediately drove to the lead.  However, Darrell Nelson is one of the top modified racers in this area and he began to work his way to second over the course of the first nine laps.  At the halfway mark, Nelson edged past Mass for the lead.  Mass came right back and repassed him to lead laps 11-13.  Nelson finally made the winning move on lap 14 in a race that ran nonstop to the checkers.  Mass held off an impressive run by Mark Hanson from ninth to finish second.  Craig Thatcher and Jason Vandekamp completed the top five.  Eric Martini, Jesse Glenz, Landon Atkinson, Jake Miller and Scott Duvall rounded out the top ten.

To conclude the evening for the NASCAR Dash second event of the season, the rumble of the Late Models filled the cool, damp night air.  Although their 30 lap feature race was slowed five times under caution, it proved to be a very entertaining finale for the evening.  Paul Parker blasted to the early lead from his pole starting position followed by Greg Nippoldt.  A couple of cautions slowed the pace with five laps in, as drivers were jockeying for position behind the leaders.  A run of sixteen green flag laps found 10th starter Adam Hensel on the move forward in a big way.  In fact, Hensel wrestled the top spot away from Parker on lap 18 for the lead.  The third yellow blinked on with 21 laps scored with AJ Diemel, John Kaanta and Darrell Nelson also in contention for the top five spots during this run.  Kaanta was strong on the restart and eventually moved to second.  Another yellow two laps later set the stage for yet another pass for the lead on lap 24, as Kaanta moved past Hensel.  The final caution flew with 26 laps in the books, keeping things close up front.  Kaanta held off Hensel over the final four circuits for the win in a race that provided some outstanding side-by-side action for the top spots pretty much throughout the entire distance.  Diemel finished third ahead of Nelson and Eric Breeschoten.  Jake Redetzke, Jeff Massingill, NASCAR Dash Night 1 winner Pat Doar, Chad Mahder and Don Shaw completed the top ten.  Fellow front row starters Parker and Nippoldt slipped back to 11th and 12th, showing the tremendous competition in this division on a very fast track.

Next Saturday night is the annual Firecracker Special featuring a huge fireworks display.  The late models have the night off.  Then the 7th Annual Night of Destruction on July 4 is followed by the inaugural World of Outlaw weekend July 10-12.  The NASCAR Dash event #3 returns on July 18, as the action remains fast and furious at the Legendary Cedar Lake Speedway.
