Shane Sabraski Wins Two Legendary 100 Titles
(Smith, Thatcher, Gullikson, Havel & Hanestad Champions)

New Richmond, WI (9-13-14)

By: Greg Parent

The final night of the 9th Annual Legendary 100 provided some entertaining championship features.  The most thrilling finish of the evening came in the Midwest Modified main event, as Shane Sabraski edged out Jason Vandekamp by a matter of inches at the line for his first career Legendary 100 title.  In the very next race, Sabraski picked up his second Legendary 100 win with a dominating performance in the Pro Stock division.  Other Legendary 100 winners at the Cedar Lake Speedway included Brady Smith in the Late Models, Craig Thatcher in the Modifieds, Jim Gullikson in the Street Stocks, Jason Havel in the Pure Stocks, and Buddy Hanestad in the Hornets.  With the addition of one new arrival on Saturday, the total car count for the 2014 edition of this popular event tallied 249.  Although the weather was unseasonably cool all three nights, no rain plagued the event like it had during several previous editions.

The format this year saw a complete independent show run on Thursday night with the only connection to the championship features on Saturday night being the highest finisher in the Thursday night feature that did not qualify for the Saturday night championship main event would earn a provisional starting spot.  The Friday night qualifying features moved the top twelve finishers directly into the championship races on Saturday while the remainder of the field would run B Mains and a Last Chance Qualifier to determine the lineup.  With 248 cars on hand Friday, fans saw a total of 473 green flag racing laps in 41 races make for a long night.  Qualifying feature winners on Friday included Brady Smith in the Late Models, Scott Duvall in the Modifieds, Tim Borgeson in the Pro Stocks, Jason Vandekamp in the Midwest Mods, Jim Gullikson in the Street Stocks, Jason Havel in the Pure Stocks and Buddy Hanestad in the Hornets.  Those drivers would sit on the pole for the championship features on Saturday night.

On Saturday night, there were 10 B Mains and 4 Last Chance Qualifiers prior to the running of the Legendary 100 championship feature races.  With the field set after 168 green flag laps of preliminary action, it was time to crown the seven champions for the 2014 Legendary 100.  The four provisional starters were Jeremy Kerzman in the Midwest Mods, Rich Bishop in the Pro Stocks, Adam Hensel in the Modifieds and Mike Bear in the Late Models.  Those four divisions would see 25 cars in their feature races.

The first Legendary 100 feature on the track was the 15 lap Pure Stock race for the 15 car field.  After a caution on the opening lap, the race would run 15 laps nonstop to the checkers.  This race featured a great three car battle up front for a good share of the race between Jason Newkirk, Jason Havel and 2013 Legendary 100 champion George Richards.  Newkirk led the opening lap, Havel snuck by to lead lap two, and then it was Newkirk holding a slim lead for the next 12 laps.  Once Richards caught the lead duo just before the halfway mark, it was a three car race for the top spot with the runner-up position changing hands numerous times behind Newkirk.  On the final lap, Newkirk looped his car in turn 2, allowing Havel and Richards to race by.  Havel completed his weekend sweep with his first Legendary 100 title.  Richards finished second ahead of Michael Blevins, Jay Folz and Newkirk who recovered for a disappointing fifth place finish.  Brendon Scott, Margo Butcher, Rob Grabon, Matt Deragon and Nick Traynor completed the top ten.

The Street Stocks rolled trackside for their 20 lap Legendary 100 feature with 18 cars.  Jim Gullikson and Chris Peterson brought the field to the green.  The race would be slowed five times under caution, but it was Gullikson leading all the way for his second Legendary 100 title.  Unlike the pure stock race, nobody really had anything for Gullikson in the street stock feature.  Danny Richards, Peterson, Adam Soltis and Ryan Kostreba rounded out the top five.  Completing the top ten finishers were Marcus Simonson, Brad Schmidt, Allen Gessel Jr, Jay Kesan and defending champion Sam Fankhauser.

Although Buddy Hanestad saw his winning streak at CLS snapped on Thursday night, team Coopman from Mankato was only on hand for the opening night.  Hanestad sat on the pole for the 15 lap feature, and 15 nonstop laps later he earned his first Legendary 100 title.  For Hanestad, it was his 13th victory at CLS in 14 races.  William Voeltz, Jess Seim, Derrick Johnson and Chris Dyke finished behind Hanestad in the top five.  Completing the top ten in the 15 car field was Brandon Dyke, Kayla Lallier, Darrell Johnson, Steve Hanson and Tim Thoennes.

Up next was the 25 lap Midwest Modified championship race.  It would prove to be the most entertaining and exciting race of the evening.  2013-2014 track champion Jason Vandekamp was looking for his first Legendary 100 victory, and his pole starting spot gave him a great opportunity.  Vandekamp led the first 18 laps, as the race was slowed twice under caution on laps 4 & 15.  Following the lap 15 caution, Shane Sabraski worked his way into second and began putting the pressure on Vandekamp for the lead.  Sabraski grabbed the top spot on lap 19, but Vandekamp wrestled it back on lap 20.  Sabraski regained the lead on laps 21-23 when the yellow blinked on for debris in turn two following contact between two cars running well back in the field.  This set the stage for an exciting two lap dash to checkers!  It was just a matter of how many times drivers and fans would have to do this before the race would end.  The yellow light would blink on three more times before the race would finally be complete.  Each time Sabraski and Vandekamp would battle each other for the lead only to have spins on three separate occasions by three different cars nullify their efforts.  Finally the third time was the charm, and what a finish it would turn out to be.  Vandekamp grabbed the lead at the white flag, but Sabraski powered around the high side on the final lap to race by Vandekamp at the checkers by a matter of several inches.  Although not as close as the 2013 late model finish, track officials reviewed the video replay to be certain.  Defending champion Skeeter Estey, Jason Schill and Nick Koehler completed the top five.  Ryan Olson from 14th, Jake Smith from 13th, Ashley Mehrwerth, Jeremy Kerzman from 25th and Kyle Matuska from 18th rounded out the top ten.

Fresh off his first Legendary 100 victory, Shane Sabraski jumped into his Pro Stock for their 25 lap main event.  Racing from his outside front row starting position, Sabraski dominated the race leading all 25 laps for back-to-back Legendary 100 wins in the two divisions he had qualified cars for.  Sabraski would not have a shot at going three for three, as he was unable to put his modified into that championship feature race.  The pro stock feature was slowed three times under caution with the last yellow creating a two lap dash to the checkers, but on each occasion Sabraski was just too strong and was never seriously challenged for the lead.  Tim Borgeson, 2013-2014 track champion Mike Loomis, Tyler Kinter and 14th starter Tommy Richards rounded out the top five.  Jeff Brauer, Gunnar Watkins, Adam Ayotte from 16th, Darrell Hazelton and Ryan Wiome completed the top ten.

Following some track prep maintenance, the 25 car Modified field lined up for their 30 lap Legendary 100 feature.  Scott Duvall and Shaun Peterson brought the field to the green, but it was third starter Craig Thatcher blasting into the lead exiting turn two.  The seven-time CLS track champion (six titles in the modified division) was just too strong, as Thatcher led all 30 laps for his XXX Legendary 100 victory.  The race was only slowed once under caution with 23 laps scored.  Rodney Sanders came from 9th to finish second while 6th starter Joey Jensen rode home in third.  Two-time modified track champion Darrell Nelson finished fourth with Shaun Peterson holding on for fifth.  Rounding out the top ten finishers was 2014 track champion Jason Gross, Duvall, Kelly Estey, 2010 track champion Jason Miller and Brandon Jensen.

The final race of the evening and final race of the season for the weekly racing divisions would pit 25 high-powered, ground-pounding Late Models against each other for their 40 lap feature.  Coming off his preliminary night victory, Brady Smith was on the pole with Thursday night winner Jake Redetzke to his outside.  Smith blasted to the early lead and survived five cautions in the first 11 laps.  The last one required the red flag, as Darrell Nelson slammed hard into the turn one concrete wall following a restart.  Nelson was okay, but his car sustained heavy damage.  The final 29 laps ran green, but the track took rubber and nobody could move forward.  Smith was followed by Redetzke, defending Legendary 100 champion Scott Gilberts, two-time and current track champion Chad Mahder and five-time track champion Pat Doar.  Adam Hensel from 14th, Eric Breeschoten, Harry Hanson from 19th, five-time track champion Brent Larson, and 2011 track champion Rick Hanestad completed the top ten.

With the conclusion of the annual Legendary 100, Cedar Lake Speedway would like to thank all of the drivers, crew members, families, fans, sponsors and everybody associated with making the 2014 edition a success.  The only remaining event for the 2014 racing season will be the 9th Annual Hornet Enduro next Saturday September 20 scheduled to pay $10,000 to the winner based on the number of entries.  The Enduro will get underway at 5:30 p.m.
