The Friday night program at the Masters started with some light rain, but the weather improved and the second night saw 61 USMTS modifeds along with 21 NASCAR Midwest mods in action. The NASCAR Midwest Modifieds were added to the program on Friday and Saturday, running three heats and a feature each night. Jason Vandekamp picked up his 43rd career CLS feature win in this division, as he led the entire 20 lap distance from his outside front row starting spot.
Heat race wins in the NASCAR Midwest Modifieds saw Vandekamp, Jason Gross and Michael Truscott lead the way. Using the standard draw/redraw format, young Corey Jones drew the pole position for the feature with Vandekamp lining up outside of him. With the all-time CLS feature winner on the front row, it was a forgone conclusion who stood the best chance of parking it in Victory Lane. Three cautions slowed the pace, but after 20 laps of green flag racing Vandekamp concluded his sweep for the evening and took home the $500 top prize. Grant Southworth passed Jones for second on lap 13 following the third and final caution period. Jones turned in a solid run for third. Eric Lamm and Paul Niznik rounded out the top five. Completing the top ten finishers was Truscott, Gross, Nick Ayotte, Matt Kelley and Jeremy Kerzman.
The Midwest mods return for another full program on Saturday night. Congrats to Winona, Minnesota's Josh Angst for a couple of strong USMTS heat race performances and his 12 lap fast dash victory. The win put Angst on the pole for the big $50,000-to-win 70 lap main event. The USMTS and CLS agreed to start the 70 lap feature race three wide. Ryan Gustin will go from the middle front row starting spot while Rodney Sanders will roll off from the outside front row. Come on out and enjoy an evening of USMTS modified racing action at CLS for the final night of the 2017 edition of the Masters.
